Here's a neat piece on clay pipes from the fine folks at James Town. I have to tell ya... something like that would come in mighty handy.
When are three bowls better than one?
When your tobacco pipe bowl is so small that you only get a few puffs before you must refill and relight your tobacco! Early 17th century English and Dutch tobacco pipes were small, reflecting the high cost of tobacco. A person would have to smoke about 25 pipefuls to finish just one ounce of tobacco. So why not have three bowls on your pipe so you could fill all of them at the same time and smoke them one after another? We don't know the real reason for this unusual three-bowl Dutch tobacco pipe that was found on an archaeological site near Jamestown. Perhaps it was presented to a colonist by a Dutch merchant as a practical joke!
